An evening of chamber music on Tuesday, March 15 at 7pm in the Portland Art Museum’s Whitsell Auditorium will feature Portland Opera Resident Artists Abigail Dock, mezzo-soprano, and Katrina Galka, soprano. Their shared program will include Portland Opera’s Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor Nicholas Fox as pianist.
Dock and Galka will open the program for the evening with Robert Schumann’s “Erste Begegnung” from Spanisches Liederspiel, Op. 71, No. 1. Galka will perform Francis Poulenc’s Fiançailles pour rire and a selection of songs by Franz Schubert. Dock will perform Les nuits d’été by Hector Berlioz. The second half of their program, will feature American standards from Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers and more.
Katrina Galka is a second year Portland Opera Resident Artist. During Portland Opera’s 50th anniversary season, she performed the role of Ida in Die Fledermaus, Frasquita in Carmen, Kim in Show Boat, and Adina in The Elixir of Love. This season, she will portray Papagena in The Magic Flute (May 6-14), Johanna in Sweeney Todd (June 3-11), and Elvira in The Italian Girl in Algiers (July 22-August 4). Over the last year, Galka has received numerous awards in competitions including the Jensen Foundation, Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, National Opera Association, and the Mario Lanza Institute.
Abigail Dock is in her first year a Resident Artist with Portland Opera. During the 2016 season, she will perform the part of the Third Lady in The Magic Flute and Olga in Eugene Onegin (July 8-26). The Oregon native received her Masters in Opera Performance from The Boston Conservatory and her Bachelors of Music from Rice University. She has performed with the prestigious Caramoor Festival and at the Seagle Music Colony, both in New York, and is a graduate of the Opera works training program in California.
Now in its eleventh season, the Resident Artists Program nurtures and trains the next generation of talented opera singers. Each season, three to five exceptionally gifted young singers are provided a “bridge” between the conservatory world and the professional world. Chosen at national auditions, they embark on a full-time residency and the opportunity to experience: starring and supporting roles in Portland Opera productions, master classes with international guest artists from main stage productions, vocal coaching with Portland Opera’s principal coach, acting classes devoted to interpretation and communication.
